I’m appealing to you on behalf of my friend, Patricia. She is a published author, an art photographer, an award winning blogger (www.thelastleafgardener.com) and a gardener. Her current body of work and her livelihood revolve around what grows in her garden and the array of wild birds who visit it. She is endlessly passionate about her birds and sharing her photographs and information about them. And yet, because of circumstances beyond her control, she is, at this point in her life, completely financially depleted.

Medical Conditions

Patricia is physically challenged by a nerve condition, neurofibromatosis, which causes tumors to grow on nerves all over her body. In addition, she deals with four severe eye conditions: Keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, Staphyloma, Optic atrophy, and Monocular vision. These have left her designated as legally blind. She handles these conditions with amazing grace but they have made it difficult, if not impossible, to find a “regular job”, mainly because people mistakenly believe her nerve condition is contagious and also because the lumps and bumps caused by the condition affect her appearance. As a result, Patricia has created her own niche to support herself and has done so for many years because she is creative, talented, determined, and resilient. Did I mention hard working?

The Sky is Falling

Beginning in 2016, the sky began to fall for Patricia. She fell on her face on an NYC sidewalk, breaking her nose and requiring nine stitches in her forehead. She also broke her expensive, special needs eyeglasses causing her temporarily to be unable to work and to promote her work. In the summer of 2017, she suffered complications possibly due to neurofibromatosis requiring her to wear a boot cast for six weeks.

In spite of all this, Patricia was able to finish her book, Words in Our Beak, Volume One, which is now available in print and digital formats. However, the biggest blow came when she learned that she needed to shell out a lot more money than she could afford to cover medical expenses relating to her neurofibromatosis. She has undergone numerous essential surgical procedures not covered by health insurance. The cost of these procedures sent her over the edge financially. For Patricia, this most recent financial setback is insurmountable on her own. These medical procedures are not over. They will continue due to the neurofibromatosis.

As a result, Patricia is depending on the kindness of strangers to help her get back on her feet as well as working very hard herself to get out of this situation. It is enormously stressful and hard to be creative and productive under such conditions, but Patricia works hard every day to do just that.

Which brings me to YouCaring to ask if you’d be willing to help Patricia out. She is in immediate danger of losing her studio apartment. Her apartment is her headquarters for all her professional endeavors. Most of her writing and photography occurs in and about her tiny urban rooftop garden where she loves and cares for many NYC birds. Losing her home would be a disaster for Patricia. She desperately needs financial help so she can get back on her feet and become self-sufficient again. I have no doubt, with a little help, she will do just that. In fact, she has already finished writing Words in Our Beak, Volume Two!
